Abstract

The university professor constitutes a population at risk for Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs). General Objective: To evaluate the risk factors for NCDs in university professors of the Faculty of Health Sciences of a National University. Subjects and Methods: This is an observational-descriptive, cross-sectional and prospective research. The sample was non-probabilistic, deliberate and of volunteers, represented by 162 teachers who met the inclusion criteria. The data collection instrument was a record card comprising the FINDRISC scale and the WHO HEARTS initiative, used to assess the 10-year risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease, respectively. Results: The mean age was 52.10 years. The female sex (73.46%) was the largest population with a history of cardiovascular disease, renal disease, diabetes, overweight, obesity, smoking and a history of high blood glucose. In contrast, the male sex predominated in the average abdominal circumference, high blood pressure (44.44%) and pharmacological treatment for hypertension (32.72%). Both sexes consumed fruits and vegetables, and lacked physical activity equally. Conclusions: There was a statistically significant association between the level of metabolic risk and age groups, but not with sex. In terms of cardiovascular risk, the low level was more frequent and was the most frequent in both sexes. The second level of risk was moderate and was found in the male sex. Patients with high cardiovascular risk had the highest average age.
