Research, Development and Innovation (R+D+i) in Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) adapts to the rapid changes in the world of work, such as digitalization, teleworking, emerging risks and the ageing of the working population. These changes increase risks, so innovative preventive policies are needed. The function and objectives of R+D+i in OSH are defined and the strategies for addressing the problems from the different disciplines of OSH are mentioned, such as occupational medicine and nursing, hygiene, safety, ergonomics, psychosociology and environmental management. In addition, revolutionary technological tools such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Virtual/Augmented Reality (VR/AR), technology/wearables and smart accessories (wearables) are highlighted, with practical examples of their application in sectors such as agriculture, mining, manufacturing, construction and services. Sector-specific OSH solutions are also addressed, highlighting the need to tailor solutions to particular demands. The essence of knowledge transfer is highlighted, showing how research findings are translated into applicable policies and technologies, highlighting interdisciplinary collaboration and national and international organizations. Finally, the challenges and opportunities of R+D+i in OSH are discussed, concluding with a call to action to promote innovation, collaboration and inclusion in this field. The goal is to move towards creating a preventative culture that promotes safer, healthier work environments and better productive outcomes.
